Crossing the cultural landscape

“I have benefitted from different aspects through this relationship with mentor Raymond, from identifying my career path, and understanding the similarities and differences of each engineering profession, to sharing cultural experiences from our travels. My mentor is enthusiastic about different cultures, especially Chinese literature and history, and he inspired me to start reading books and poems from the Tang dynasty. He would explain to me the meaning of some poems and shared poems he had written, which reflect his views on different issues and current affairs. He has broadened my horizons towards different cultures, and helped me understand that I should not focus only on developing my skills and profession, but should also appreciate different kinds of beauty in this world. After each meeting, he would follow up with messages to remind me about the things we talked about. I am very grateful that Raymond always introduces to me new knowledge that I may not be taught in lectures or might not learn in my future working life.

The tour of the Jewish Cemetery, organised by the Mentorship Office, and exploring Jewish culture and learning about some famous people in history who had a huge impact on the development of Hong Kong, was an enlightening experience. Both Raymond and I had a fruitful afternoon learning about this special piece of history in Hong Kong.”
