Always there to help

“From the mentoring relationship I already really learnt a lot. From the gatherings with Thomas, my very good mentor, I know more about the operations of the Hong Kong Government as Thomas had been working as a civil servant for several decades and has plenty of connections with different officials. I think working for the government could be a good career choice for me and Thomas has offered me a lot of assistance by providing me useful information to prepare myself. He is now a consultant and visits different Mainland cities, writing reports to help the government formulate better policies. His passion to help Hong Kong has touched me and I really want to contribute to society. He is very knowledgeable, and knows a lot about different Mainland places. He has shared with us the history of and interesting facts about different cities of China. He also travels a lot to different countries. Last time we met we discussed global politics and the US relations with neighbouring countries; we also touched on Chinese herbal medicine. All these topics are very interesting and I can learn many things at the same time.

Thomas is very proactive as a mentor. At each gathering, he asks us so many questions, and also tries to know more about the current developments of HKU and our Faculty. He is also very kind; depending on our needs, he is always trying to offer his help. He wants to contribute back to HKU because without his alma mater, he would not have become so successful.

The Mentoring Programme is really very beneficial to me as my mentor has been giving me inspirational insights. He is willing to help us, from advising on our study-abroad options and career plan. He is one of the best mentors that I have ever known and I really look forward to not only having him as a mentor but as my lifelong friend.”
