“My mentor Mr Philip Fan was very generous with his time and energy. He shared inspiring stories about working in Nigeria as a fresh graduate and offered sound advice when I approached him with questions about how to prioritise my goals in life. Becoming a mentee also meant that I became part of an extended mentee family. We hiked Dragon’s Back together, tried the food at delicious vegetarian restaurants, and communicated regularly on social media.<\/p>\n

Mr Fan’s former mentees are also inspiring people with very different backgrounds, from whom I have learned a tremendous amount. They have variously volunteered at Mother Teresa’s ashram in Calcutta, climbed Lhotse mountain and carved out new businesses in Hainan. I feel privileged to be able to join intellectually stimulating discussions over the dinner table about ecological tourism and the peopling of East Asia 50,000 years ago.<\/p>\n
