I recalled once my mentor shared with us his personal experience of designing a solar car for a competition during his university time. He wanted to emphasise the message that practical skills can be proven in competitions, and we can learn something that cannot be found in textbooks. He encouraged us not to be afraid to join competitions even when we are busy with our studies. ‘You will never know how much work you can handle until you try it!’

One of the most important things that my mentor taught us was about moral values. He suggested that we should be aware of our attitudes towards studies, our future career and, most importantly, our life. He encouraged us to consider accepting a job if and only if we believe that we can learn from and be motivated by the job, and less about how much leisure time or salary we can gain from it. This teaching is not new, but is easily forgotten with the passage of time.

For me, it is really a great pleasure to be able to exchange ideas with my mentor and Yuying. When I first met them at the Inauguration Ceremony, I already felt that I met the right people. Even though sometimes they talked about engineering, which I am not familiar with, I still received some inspiration about university life from them.

The Mentorship Programme seems like an extra work on top of a student’s own studies, but it is worth more than we expected. I am really glad to have this opportunity to be friends with Mr Wong and Yuying, who have brought a lot of stories and insights, which have enriched my university life.”

Mentor: Mr Alexander Wong Teck Sun
Mentee (2018-19): Henry Lau Ki Fung, BBA(Acc&Fin) Year 2

“My mentor Mr Alexander Wong, I and another mentee, Zou Yuying (BEng[ME] Year 2), had a lot of fun during our conversations.
