My mentor Mr Andrew Sheard has been very open to sharing his career experiences with me and, even though he is not in the legal field, he has been able to give me practical advice concerning how I might go about my legal career. He introduced me to one of his previous mentees, who is a law graduate and is now a practicing barrister. We met and chatted over lunch, and I was able to learn about her work and she gave me invaluable advice about my academic studies and career options. I am also interested in intellectual property law, and Andrew has shared with me how issues in intellectual property law may arise in his field (for example in commercial shoots), which added to my interest in this aspect.

Andrew is very friendly and is a very relaxed person, with whom I feel at ease when talking to. He is always willing to connect me to other people who he thinks I could learn from. I am delighted to meet some senior students, even graduates, and hear about how their lives have been. These previous mentees are from different fields – science, social sciences, linguistics – and chatting with them has really broadened my horizons! One of the former mentees travelled from Europe back to Hong Kong travelling only by foot and by train, which took him four weeks; and another mentee joined a meditation event at which he was prohibited from talking for 10 days! These are all very interesting stories to learn from.”

In the photo: Mentee Benson Liu (1st left, BA 2017), Peter Somogyi (2nd right, BSc Year 3) and Grace Mak (1st right, BBA 2017), mentor Andrew Sheard and Yolanda (3rd right)

Mentor: Andrew Sheard
Mentee (2017-18): Yolanda Lau, BA(LiteraryStudies)&LLB Year 3

“I have definitely benefitted from the mentoring experience.
